As friends of hillport house we have started this website to raise awareness to the proposed closures of all council homes to be put into effect within the next 12 months.

THE SERVICE AND COUNCIL PROPOSALS 

Hillport house has been open now for 42 years caring for clients with dementia.Over the years hillport has set a presidence providing each and every person with individual care.Hillport have since 1996 have managed to consequtivley mantain the charter mark awarded for excellence 4 times.

The proposal to close the home came as a shock to all as it provides such a relevent service.Not only this but the home has just undergone a £500,000 referbishment.

The council have presented its changing lives program which iam sure everybody is aware of.The main details are that instead of people being cared for in homes they will be cared for in their own homes with extra provisions given directly to the client for them to use as they wish.This is a great idea for some as it would allow them the opportunity to remain in their own homes and perhaps benefit from none traditional services.Unfortunatly then extra provisions and services are not in place. For the clients of hillport house this would not be of benefit.These extra provisions may be of use to a client who is able to make viable decisions .The clients of hillport are amongst the grey area the people who society forgot,people who for their own saftey could not be left alone in their own homes.The council does recognise the fact that it is not possible for all people to be kept in their own homes but have still approved the closure of all their homes.The thinking is that there are adequate places in the private sector where profit comes before care.As hillport is a specialised unit many of its clients  originally came from the private sector.

When people come to hillport it is the last resort for the families,many clients come to hillport as they are no longer able to cope in their own homes recieving care from their family members or care workers.The decision in all cases is a difficult one for resident and family alike but unfortunatly with a cruel illness like alzheimers it is the only one.

Hillport is unique for many reasons,firstly it specialises in caring for people with dementia dealing with the unpredictable and demanding behaviour associated with the illness.

Secondly the home provides a friendly home from home service treating each person as an individual allowing clients a freedom of choice and sense of wellbeing and at all times promoting independence and self worth.
